While saltwater pool owners don’t necessarily need to worry about chlorine additions, they still need to make sure they have enough salt in their pools for their generators to work properly.
Knowing how much salt to add is important. This pool salt calculator can help you get a good idea.
If you need to know how much water your pool holds, use our calculator for a rough estimate.
Note that salt bags typically weigh 40 pounds, so that is the baseline for the number of bags needed based on your salt output.
Knowing How Much Salt You Need
Salt levels should be between 3,000 and 4,000 ppm. These levels should satisfy most saltwater generators’ recommendations, but you should always check your operator’s manual to get more exact levels.
How much salt you need to add depends on how much is already present in the pool.
Testing is the only way to determine your salt levels. You should have a testing kit that includes sodium chloride testing, like the Taylor K-2006-SALT.
A separate salt tester can be used if you already have a reliable test kit.

It’s That Easy!
Pool chemistry doesn’t need to be complicated. Using the pool salt calculator should take some of the guessing out of your dosage.
If you add a lot of salt, take your time and do it in increments. Test in between to make sure you are getting to the right levels.
